Setting Up and Using Mozilla Thunderbird
-
{Thunderbird Account Setup}
-
[Downloading/Installing Thunderbird] Thunderbird can be found at http://www.getthunderbird.com/ Download the program from the link off of the main page, and follow the setup wizard to install the program on your computer. Run Thunderbird.
-
[Create Account] This is the first screen you will be presented with after running Thunderbird, select "Email Account" and hit [Next >].
-
[Identity] Thunderbird will ask you for the name you'd like message recipients to see, and the email address you are setting up. Fill in the fields accordingly, and hit [Next >].
-
[Server Information] You will be presented with this screen asking for your server type (POP), incoming server (your domain) and the outgoing server (mail.yourdomain.com). Fill the fields in accordingly.
The "Use Global Inbox" option will use the "local" top-level folders. If you plan to add another account to your Thunderbird client at a later time, it is much easier to choose not to use the Global Inbox, and have a separate folder for each account. Click [Next >].
-
[User Names] This step requires you to simply enter your user name for ingoing and outgoing mail, which is usually just the "user" part, before user@yourdomain.com. Click [Next >].
-
[Account Name] Here you enter what you would like this account to be called. Any identifying description of the account should work well. Click [Next >].
-
[Verifying Setup] Make sure all of your information looks correct. If so, hit the [Finish] button, you've just set up your email account in Thunderbird.

{Getting Mail & Configuring Thunderbird}
-
[Check Mail] To check your mail from within Thunderbird, hit the [Get Mail] image shown below.
Thunderbird will pop up a message asking you for your password, enter it to retrieve mail. If you choose not to use Password Manager, every time you check your mail you will be asked for you password. However, if you do use password manager, your email account password will be stored on your computer, so make sure to use this option only on a private, personal computer.
-
[Tweaking Mail Retrieval Settings] To access this menu go to the [Tools] menu and select [Account Options...]. Here in the Server Settings you can configure Thunderbird's email retrieval behaviors to your personal preferences.
Notice here that we have selected "Leave messages on server." This will allow us to see the same emails we've already read if we log into our email via webmail or another client. It's important to note, though, that without selecting either of the two indented deletion options, it is possible for the inbox to fill up to its maximum quota over time, and stop us from receiving new mail.
-
[Tweaking Thunderbird Settings] From the [Tools] menu select [Options...] to access this menu. Here you can choose to configure some of Thunderbird's behaviors.
If you plan on using Thunderbird as your default mail client, go ahead and check the top box in "General Settings." All of the other options can be set to personal preference.
